We know LASIK surgery isn’t something to be taken lightly. In fact, LASIK surgery is a pretty big deal and decision in your life. Indeed LASIK surgery can bring big advantages, but also a set of risks.

LASIK surgery is a type of vision correction surgery. It aims to reshape your cornea to correct your refractive errors. LASIK is a great option for people who wears contact lens and glasses on a regular basis.

If you’re reading this, you are probably thinking about LASIK, right? Let’s dive into some of the important things you should know and consider before going for a LASIK surgery!

There are other types of laser vision correction besides LASIK, know all your options

Did you know that LASIK isn’t your only option? So many people think that LASIK is the only available option when it comes to correcting their vision. The truth is, there are many other types of laser vision correction procedures. The different approaches are targeted for different types of patients. Here are examples of other vision correction surgeries in Singapore:

  • Epi-LASIK
  • TransPRK
  • ReLEx SMILE

All of the procedures above are not the same as LASIK. There might some similar steps, but none are exactly the same. For example, LASIK uses a femtosecond laser to create a corneal flap and then an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. Meanwhile, ReLEx SMILE uses only femtosecond laser throughout the whole procedure to create a lenticule. While for epi-LASIK and TransPRK, it doesn’t use femtosecond laser at all, only excimer laser.

As you can see, all these procedures are different than one another. Therefore, do a thorough research on each of the procedures before choosing which type of laser vision correction surgery. You could also ask for advice from your surgeon to determine which procedure will be the best fit for you. It will depend on your eye condition, general health, and also lifestyle.

In LASIK surgery, your surgeon matters

Before going forward with your LASIK surgery in Singapore, make sure you know that your surgeon has a reputable track record. For example, you could find reviews about his/her service from his/her past patients. Find out what other clinics and well-known medical websites have to say about the surgeon of your choice. Even though LASIK is a common eye surgery with a high success rate, choosing a good surgeon is still crucial. This is because the experienced surgeon will be able to handle unforeseen circumstances better.

The result of LASIK surgery is not permanent, you may still need to wear glasses after LASIK

You need to understand that your eyes go through a natural progression in the decline of vision quality. As you grow older, it will decline by nature. This is something that you cannot stop, and something beyond what any vision correction surgery could prevent.

The result of a LASIK surgery is meant to be permanent and irreversible. However, because of this natural change and process, there is a chance that your optimal corrected vision will no longer be as optimal once you grow older.

In this case, once your eyes experience a natural decrease in quality, you might need to wear glasses to support your vision. This doesn’t mean that the LASIK surgery’s result is now gone, but it’s just you are experiencing a natural decline on top of your corrected vision. Of course, with a corrected vision, the quality after a natural decline will be better compared to your vision before your LASIK surgery.
